The Show Must Go On!
A live performance is unique. You only get one chance to capture it.
When it comes to Live Sound engineering, reliability and flexibility are essential. RECORDER.1 is the swiss army knife for your live production, be it for recording, virtual soundcheck or playout.
It delivers the perfect solution: reliable, uninterrupted recording and virtual soundcheck with up to 194 input and output channels in only 1U.
What can RECORDER.1 do?
RECORDER.1 is a high track count soundcheck and recording solution with selected pre-installed audio hardware like 128 channel Dante or 192 channel MADI interfaces. All channels are recorded and played back using Steinberg's streamlined and recording optimized Software Nuendo Live. Alternatively, other soft- and hardware choices are available.
Highest quality and reliability
With production proven reliability and over 2000 hours of multitrack test recordings, RECORDER.1 is an exceptionally stable virtual soundcheck/record/playback solution with an extremely high amount of in- and outputs.
RECORDER.1 has proven to be reliable even with most demanding projects under rough conditions. Being used in hundreds of live shows, broadcast environments and events worldwide, our recording solutions have handled even the most demanding tasks with ease.
Rely on RECORDER.1 for your audio recording and virtual soundcheck tasks.
Why RECORDER.1?
Every RECORDER.1 is handcrafted in Germany by our specialized technicians, underlying strict quality control and comprehensive system stability tests. Each RECORDER.1 passes through comprehensive real life test scenarios as well as synthetic long term stress tests to verify stability, performance and overall reliability of the complete system.
This is followed by a certification process for the selected audio soft- and hardware.
Every recorder is individually tested before it leaves our QA department!

RECORDER.1 and Virtual Sound Check
Who else can explain better what RECORDER.1 does, than one of our customers who uses it in professional environments on a daily basis?
Oliver Voges owns our RECORDER.1 for over 2 years now, using it both for recording and for virtual soundcheck.
"Virtual Soundcheck has become an indispensable part at large live productions. It has become much more than just a soundcheck without the band in a new venue.
Preparation for the new season has become an essential part; prerecorded stems and a timecode track can be used to design and program a new light show. This way, the artist can review a complete show with audio, light and video from FOH and suggest changes if required.
When recording stems of for example band, vocals and atmos, it is very easy to deliver live mixes for various platforms, be it social media or a complete live stream of the show.
The possibilities are unlimited, I don’t know any artist who wants to work without such valuable recordings. It creates added value for all involved in the production."
Oliver Voges (FoH Engineer for Casper, Fettes Brot, Kool Savas, Tangerine Dream, Royal Bunker Savas & Sido, Eurovision Song Contest etc.)

Why can’t I record 128 tracks on a normal SSD?
Regular SSDs may be able to record this amount of tracks at the same time, but it is unreliable. While the audio throughput is not very high compared to what SSDs can handle, the real-time process is what may cause errors.
In order to guarantee the high amount of recordable audio tracks, RECORDER.1 high endurance SSDs have an enormous overhead for improved real-time writing, so both high track counts and an intensive use over many years should not be able to cause errors with these drives. Additionally, all SSDs are tested in-house before they leave the test lab, which completes the warranty. The use of self-installed SSDs may lead to loss of performance certification.
Can other DAW software be installed?
Yes, RECORDER.1 uses a well-tweaked version of Windows 7 64 bit. However, to not lose our performance certification, we highly recommend to contact us beforehand. We cannot guarantee full recording performance, if you choose to install another recording software. Please refrain from installing ANY operating system tweak or tune tools. The OS is already optimized by our specialists and should be left as is.
What about AVID Pro Tools?
Pro Tools works fine on RECORDER.1, but is limited to only 32 inputs with ASIO. Pro Tools HDX will not physically fit into the chassis. HD Native PCIe (which will offer 64 inputs) is supported
Can other audio hardware be installed?
In general, yes, as long as we have tested it. However, to avoid loss of warranty, you MUST contact XI-MACHINES beforehand to receive a how-to document. We do this for your own safety and longevity of the system.
Can I mix with RECORDER.1?
Not really. It does have power for small projects including light plugin usage, but especially at higher track counts, the 1U form factor does not allow a fast CPU for mixing. What you need is our AUDIO-X2 Rack workstation.
What buffer sizes can be used? Can I monitor through the software?
The recorder is really meant as a recorder⁄player. Lower buffers than 512 samples at 128 tracks are not supported. With small track counts, the buffer may be lower, but we recommend to leave them at max size and monitor through a console to avoid dropouts in your precious recordings. RECORDER.4 will be able to handle low latency monitoring.
Is there a save way to integrate eLicenser or iLok dongles?
Yes. Aside from external USB port, RECORDER.1 offers 2 internal USB2 ports which are fully compatible with the mentioned dongles and pretty much any thumb stick. You will need to remove or slide the top cover backwards after removing the 3 top screws. This way your licenses are well protected and invisible. They also cannot be broken by accidental force.
What are my options to restore the original delivery state?
Each RECORDER.1 comes with a full backup of the delivery state which is stored on a hidden partition. Read the documentation on how to restore this original state (it is a clean sweep of the system drive!). To backup already recorded audio files, you can use our optionally available RecPacks.
What kind of cables can I connect to RECORDER.1?
Depending on your selected configuration you need cables and connectors either for MADI (1x multimode optical cable for 64 channels) or RJ45 Ethernet cables for interfaces using the Dante™ protocol.
Can I use wireless mouse and keyboard?
All mice and keyboards with standard USB support and compatible Windows driver are supported. However, keep in mind all wireless connections through Blutooth or radio waves may interfere with audio or video gear. Additionally required driver⁄software for wireless devices might affect the performance certification. Furthermore, mouse and keyboard need sufficient battery power during the performance.
